Grains eaten by hunter gatherers 32,000 years ago....does this negate the Paleo diet?

I found this article (http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/grains-found-in-hunter-gatherers-cave-was-32000-year-old-porridge/story-fneuzkvr-1227518875671) interesting for a variety of reasons. First of all that the journalist put the Paleo diet into the bracket of fad diets.

When we think of a fad diet, we think of these as being inherently unsafe or unhealthy. There is nothing unhealthy about a diet that encourages you to eat fresh fruit, veg and meat/fish in a variety of home made meals. Since when has fresh and home made been a fad? Or unhealthy?

Next is the fact that 32,000 year old wild oats are VASTLY different to the oats we grow today. Since we started farming for profit we have been selecting for varieties of plants that grow better, quicker, with more grain/fruit etc. This has changed the ratios of certain constituents found in the foods. Add to that the fact that the hunter gatherers of 32,000 years ago were not agricultural. They gathered whatever grains may have been in season at the time. This means that they were not eating these things multiple times a day, every single day like we do today........we simply cannot compare the porridge from this article to the way we eat grains today.

Last, but by no means least, no one expects one diet type to suit everyone. People need to stop bagging paleo which encourages real nutrition and start looking at the ridiculous meal replacement diets such as Isagenix and their ilk! Not to mention fast food rubbish & premade, refined and processed crap that many consider 'staples'!!

If i had to choose between healthy, wholesome food and a rubbish mixture containing unnecessary crap and loads of sodium etc......ill take Paleo for myself and my family any day!

Now, having said that, Paleo can be a great short term tool to get on top of poor health and begin losing excess weight and fluid retention if you feel long term change is too hard or you "don't believe in it" for whatever reason. If you do paleo for a while and then trial grains, dairy, legumes etc back into your diet.....and you have no adverse effects....then by all means add them back into your diet, but remember....MODERATION!

If you find you do suffer adverse effects which could range from bloating, brain fog, headaches to diarrhoea, etc, then dont eat them! Pretty simple really.

Real take home message though.....eat fresh, homemade, wholesome and nourishing food!!!!
